Cotton acreage in the Mexican region of Sierra de la Laguna is estimated to rise from 5,800 hectares to 15,000-20,000 hectares, during 2014, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock (SAGARPA) of Mexico’s Technology Package delivered to producers in the country.

As per SAGARPA’s estimates, cotton is the most feasible crop for the country during 2014, capable of generating employment and income for families engaged in activities related to agricultural production, reports Mexican newspaper Milenio.

Roman Alberto Cepeda Gonzalez, secretary of the Laguna region department of SAGARPA, said cotton is the only crop in the country that ensures price warranty and insurance coverage to producers, unlike other crops like maize and sorghum.

Mr. Gonzalez said the agricultural sector of the country would have a positive outcome during next year as planting conditions in Mexico have changed with plans of irrigation being implemented.

Producers in the country would also benefit from the Technology Package of SAGARPA that would help them to decide which crop to harvest depending on production, price and market, he added.

According to the SAGARPA official, cotton is the crop likely to be insured against weather contingencies during 2014, preventing damage to producers cultivating the crop.
